São aves esbeltas de cara comprida em forma de coração. Se alimenta de pequenos vertebrados: roedores, gambás, morcegos, sapos e aves pequenas. O seu canto é um grito fortíssimo, "chraich", pelo qual é conhecida como 'rasga-mortalha", é comum ouvi-lo pelas cidades. É cosmopolita, ou seja, vive no mundo inteiro, e constrói seus ninhos em sótãos de casas velhas, torres de igrejas e grutas. Vive de 10 a 13 anos.
